The Story Behind Ifrane

Ifrane repeats one shape, a diamond inside a diamond, in steady rows from edge to edge, so the rug has no centre and no top, like tiles laid across a floor. The sand stands out against charcoal wool coloured with natural dyes and knotted by hand, with soft streaks of tone running through the ground.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 50–80 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Plush

What to look for

Abrash
Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.
Natural dyes
Coloured with vegetable dyes.
Light one way, dark the other
The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
