The Story Behind the Baluchi Tribal Hand Knotted Rug

Baluch weavers, from the tribes of the Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan borderlands, often built their rugs from repeating compartments instead of one large design. This runner stacks camel-coloured panels, each holding a pair of motifs, between bars of small ladders, inside a border of rust and navy. Natural dyes give the colours their slight shifts in tone from end to end.

    Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.

    The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
