The Story Behind the Baluchi Tribal Hand Knotted Rug

The stepped diamond turns up again and again in Baluch weaving, and its shape comes from the knot itself: a pattern tied knot by knot is drawn on a grid, so diagonals become steps. Here five of them run in a column down a red field, each nested in navy and ivory, inside a dark border. The wool is coloured with natural dyes, and the red deepens or lightens with the direction of the pile.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile

Coloured with vegetable dyes.
Abrash
Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.
Light one way, dark the other
The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
