The Story Behind the Baluchi Overdyed Tribal Hand Knotted Rug

Overdyeing gives an older rug a new colour without losing its drawing. The rug is washed and its pile shorn low, then dyed again in a single shade, so the old pattern shows through as a darker shadow. This one came out slate blue, with a floral medallion and corner sprays in deep brown and a wide border of flowers, the colour shifting in tone where the wool takes the dye unevenly, an effect called abrash.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Zero pile
Material: Wool

Coloured with vegetable dyes.
Abrash
Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.

The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
