The Story Behind the Baluchi Tribal Hand Knotted Rug

The Baluch are tribes whose lands cross the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, and their women have long woven rugs on low, horizontal looms that could be taken down and carried. Their rugs are known by a dark palette of deep red, near-black and navy. This piece keeps to it: a column of crimson diamonds with the teardrop paisley called boteh scattered across the midnight ground, in wool coloured with natural dyes.

Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.

    Coloured with vegetable dyes.

    Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.

    The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
