The Story Behind the Vintage Persian Sarouk Hand Knotted Rug

The medallion and corner layout, called lechak-toranj in Persian, is one of the classic plans of Persian rugs: a central medallion, with quarter shapes echoing it in each corner. This small piece from Iran sets a gold medallion with two pendants on a red field with a scalloped edge, gold corners and a navy border of small flowers.

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile
Material: Wool
