The Story Behind the Shaggy Hand Knotted Wool Rug

Long-pile rugs are much older than the shag rugs of the 1970s. Anatolian shepherds knotted the tulu, a rug with a deep, fleecy pile, to sleep on and keep out the cold. This one is a plain field of camel wool, knotted by hand and left long, so it tumbles in loose curls and changes tone as the strands catch the light.

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
