The Story Behind the Afghan Chobi Hand Knotted Rug

Modern Chobi weavers have moved well past the Ziegler flowers the style began with, into abstract designs drawn like paintings. This one looks like paint thrown across a teal ground: a burst of red and white spreading from one side, patches of ochre and grey, and rings of small dots. Bamboo silk, a soft fibre made from bamboo with the sheen of silk, is knotted in among the wool, so parts of the rug catch the light while the wool around them stays matte.
