The Story Behind Ophelia

Ophelia borrows the language of the Gabbeh, the rug that nomadic weavers in south-west Iran fill with broad, simple fields of colour. Here crimson and plum meet at the corners around a calm ivory centre, hand knotted in wool and sheared to a soft, even pile.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 81–100 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile
Material: Wool
