The Story Behind the Gabbeh Hand Knotted Rug

The Gabbeh started with the Qashqai and Luri nomads of Iran, who wove plain fields and decorated them with a few small figures, often animals, people or simple signs. This Nepal-made version keeps that idea: an open ivory centre inside a wide beige frame, marked here and there with small woven symbols in blue and plum.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 81–100 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Low pile
Material: Wool
