The Story Behind the Baluchi Overdyed Tribal Hand Knotted Rug

Overdyeing works best on rugs with a strong first design, because the pattern stays visible under the new colour. This vintage Baluch-style piece has been washed, shorn low and dyed a deep indigo, so dark it reads almost black from across the room, with the medallion and borders showing as faint shadows when the light falls across it.

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Senneh knot
The asymmetrical knot, also called the Persian knot. The yarn wraps one warp thread, which allows finer detail.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Zero pile
