The Story Behind the Afghan Mamluk Chobi Hand Knotted Rug

Mamluk carpets were woven in Cairo in the late 1400s and early 1500s, known for kaleidoscopic designs built around octagons and many-pointed stars, and important enough that a pope ordered a set of them in 1489. This Chobi version knots that geometry in wool and silk, then overdyes it an electric blue, so the stars and compartments glow tone on tone and catch the light where the silk sits. It is large enough for a full living room or a dining table for eight.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 101–140 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Embossed, High-low pile, Low pile
Material: Wool

Washed after weaving to bring up the natural shine of the fibre.

Parts of the pile are carved by hand to different heights.
Light one way, dark the other
The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
