The Story Behind Harmonal

Harmonal reads like a skyline seen from a distance, with columns of brown and blue-grey standing shoulder to shoulder, lit by small windows of sand. Ahsan Imam kept the edges uneven so the grid feels drawn by hand. The wool is coloured with natural dyes and hand knotted, and its tones shift gently from one batch to the next.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 50–80 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: Plush

What to look for

Abrash
Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.
