The Story Behind Sculpture

Sculpture is built like a cliff face, with streaks of sand, brown and charcoal laid one above another, while patches of blue-grey drift up from one corner like stones washed down a slope. Knotted by hand in wool coloured with natural dyes, the pile is cut at two heights, so the rug can be read with the hand as well as the eye.

How it was made

Construction: Hand Knotted
Every knot tied by hand on a loom, then cut to make the pile.
Knot: Ghiordes knot
The symmetrical knot, also called the Turkish knot. The yarn wraps two warp threads, which gives a firm pile.
Density: 50–80 knots per square inch
Knots in every square inch. The higher the count, the finer the detail and the longer the rug takes to knot.
Pile: High-low pile, Plush

Light one way, dark the other
The colour looks deeper when you face the pile and lighter from the other end.
Natural dyes
Coloured with vegetable dyes.
Abrash
Hand-dyed in small batches, so the colour shifts gently across the rug. Rug makers call this abrash.
Textured pile
Parts of the pile are carved by hand to different heights.
