How to Choose the Perfect Size Rug for Every Room in Your Home

Apr 20, 2022

Rugs are a must-have in any home. We adore how they infuse each environment with personality, warmth, and colour.

On the other hand, large rug sizes can be challenging, and we receive more queries regarding runner size and rug sizing than any other category! In this carpet guide, we will be sharing a few methods that make rug shopping a breeze after years of measuring, arranging, and designing rugs for various rooms.

At first, look, picking a proper rug size may appear simple—surely you can eyeball it? Not quite. When selecting a rug that would complement your room and furniture precisely, there is much more to consider than meets the eye. Yes, picking a correct rug size is indeed science that interior designers have honed over the years, but it's rather simple to follow and follows one basic rule: measure twice.

The rules are straightforward in most rooms: Allow at least six inches between the rug's end and the walls (or counters in the case of kitchens); remove any furniture legs from rugs in high-traffic areas such as entryways and corridors, and let the space decide rug size. The guidelines for large rug sizes are a little more complicated in other areas, such as the bedroom, living room, and dining room.

We'll go over all you need to know about choosing an area rug ahead.

In The Living Room

Rug sizing in the living room follows more or less the same placement rules as those for the bedroom, but they do vary with the dynamics of the area.

Option One:

  • All the furniture legs are sitting on the rug.
  • At least 6" of the rug should be on each side of the furniture.
  • The most common sizes are 8X10, 9X12, and 10X14.

Option Two:

  • This option is ideal for a smaller space.
  • The front legs of the furniture are sitting on the rug.

Style Tip: You can put your sofa up against the wall to glorify the area rug.

Option Three:

  • Only place the coffee table on the rug.

However, option three can make your space look smaller. Hence, we only recommend going for this option if the above two options do not fit well with the room's dynamics.

In The Bedroom

Placing a proper size rug in the bedroom is a great alternative to carpeting. It lets you gaze at the stunning wooden flooring while keeping the space cozy and warm.

There are three important rules that you should focus on while placing a rug in the bedroom.

Option One:

  • All legs of the bed, along with the surrounding furniture such as the side tables, etc., are on the rug.
  • At least 18" to 20" of the rug should be left on each furniture side.

King Bed:

– Typical rug size is 9×12

Queen Bed:

– Typical rug size is 8×10

Option Two:

  • Ideal for space with deeper furniture placed at the foot of your bed
  • Two-thirds of the bed is on the rug

Option Three:

  • Opt for runners on both sides of the bed.
  • Ideal runners are slightly wider than the side tables and must not extend beyond the bed.

In The Dining Room

There is just one simple rule to follow when placing the rug in the dining room.

  • All chairs are sitting on the rug.
  • The rug should extend 36" beyond the table sides.
  • This rule is applicable for both round as well as rectangular rugs.

If you want to be sure you're getting a proper rug size for your dining room table, add at least 60 inches to the length and breadth of your table. A 40-by-60-inch table, for example, should be coupled with at least an 8-by-10-foot rug, but a 9-by-12-foot rug would be ideal.
